I would avoid anything that looks specifically designed for a small child and look for something connected to their actual interests instead. A geometric pattern, botanical print, subtle vintage design or even a darker abstract mural can feel much more grown up while still giving the room personality. I also think it helps to choose a design that can survive a few changes in furniture and accessories, because teenagers rarely keep the same aesthetic for very long.
